Ultrasound

If you are considering abortion, it is important that you first have an ultrasound. Approximately 25 to 30 percent of all positive pregnancy test turn out not to be viable pregnancies and will end in miscarriage. An ultrasound at six weeks can verify an established pregnancy by showing the fetus is firmly implanted within the uterus.

With ultrasound, the gestational sac can be seen as early as four and one-half weeks. The tiny embryo can be observed and measured by five and one-half weeks. We prefer to do ultrasounds at six weeks. At this point we can tell if the pregnancy is viable (a heartbeat can be detected) and able to continue on its natural course. Using measurements, we can estimate how many weeks you are. Some fertilized eggs never make it out of the fallopian tubes, and can cause the tube to rupture, as it grows larger. This is called an ectopic or tubal pregnancy. An ultrasound can also evaluate you for this dangerous condition so that you can seek immediate medical attention.

When you have had a positive test results with us we will schedule an appointment with you for verification of your pregnancy with the nurse. She may also order a free, confidential ultrasound. You will receive at these consultations accurate information on your pregnancy status, enabling you to make an informed decision.
